Barcelona has established itself as one of the most visited cities in the world thanks to attractions such as Mediterranean gastronomy, its historic monuments as well as its museums. From our blog, today we are suggesting a tour through the museums of Barcelona which you cannot miss!
The first stop on this tour could not be other than CaixaForum, which offers a diverse programme for all publics: with exhibitions of antique, modern and contemporary art, it is one of the most dynamic, active and alive spaces in the city.
Its exhibitions dedicated to international artists together with its programme of concerts, cinema projections, debates, conferences, scenic arts shows, literary and philosophy sessions, multimedia art and family programmes, all make CaixaForum a point of reference.
The National Museum of Art of Catalunya
The National Museum allows the visitor to journey through one thousand years of art in Catalunya, from the 10th century to the 20th century, through its four permanent collections: Romanic art and gothic art, art from the Renaissance and Baroque art, modern art, Photography,Drawings, Prints and Posters and Numismatic Cabinet of Catalunya.
The permanent collection has in total a wide artistic content with over 3,800 works of Picasso’s different periods, the majority of which belong to his youth and training phase. The Picasso museum also shows the visitor the extraordinary series of ¨Las Meninas¨, belonging to the artist’s blue period, and a wide and dilated programme of temporary exhibitions which complement the permanent collection.
At the moment the museum is starting a new stage of display with the opening of new programmes and lines of action destined to make itselfa basic space for knowledge and education: promoting a spirit of criticism and participation from the visitor.
The Antoni Tàpies Foundation
Very near El Principal de l’Eixample we also have The Antoni Tàpies Foundation founded in 1984 with the aim of fomenting the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art, but it was not until 1990 that it opened its doors in the headquarters of the old editorial ¨Montaner I Simón ¨in Barcelona.
Nowadays it combines the organization of temporary exhibitions, symposiums, conferences and cinema sessions with the edition of diverse publications which accompany the activities and periodic exhibitions dedicated to Antoni Tàpies.
A visit is a must because it holds one of the most complete collections of the works of art of Antoni Tàpies, therefore it offers an excellent opportunity to discover every period of his creative career.
Final Stop at El Principal
After a day touring through the museums in Barcelona, and as we are at the Antoni Tàpies Foundation, all that is left for us to do is give a short walk to El Principal de l’Eixample in order to taste the dishes on the new menu. We are waiting for you!
